Seychelles

Few destinations in the world can compare to the beauty and romance of the Seychelles making this one of the best honeymoons destinations. With over 115 tropical islands, surrounded by crystal clear turquoise waters, fine white sand and distinct rock formations, honeymooners are spoilt for choice. The seclusion afforded by many of these private islands only adds to its romance and appeal.

Throughout the year, the tropical climate and fresh ocean breeze almost always guarantee sunshine and wonderful weather. While other beach destinations have little but sea and sunbathing, the islands of Seychelles offer a variety of cultural diversity, interesting towns and rainforests to explore, and wildlife to see. Combine this with unrivalled levels of hospitality of its people and you have the perfect honeymoon destination.

Serengeti

We had to take a small 13 seat aircrafts and drive across the border between Kenya and Tanzania to get to the Safari Lodge in Serengeti.  But as soon as you are handed the champagne flutes at the airport you are in Honeymoon mode and forget the long trek to get there.  We were there for a familymoon but a trip to Serengeti makes for a perfect honeymoon. 

After early morning game drives to see the wildlife (if you are lucky you can witness the great migration), pamper yourself with some spa time or chill by the pool before ending the day with cocktails watching an African sunset from a Kopje – doesn’t get more romantic than that.  The thrill of seeing lions and cheetahs in the wild is like no other.  Sometimes elephants or other wildlife will stop by the watering holes near the lodge and you can see them right from the comfort of your room.  For an extra special experience wake up before the sun to go on a hot air balloon safari.  Champagne bush breakfast will be waiting for you when you land.  The memories you make here will be everlasting!

Madagascar

It might not be everyone’s dream honeymoon – transport can be tricky, prices are high, and there’s a chance of food poisoning – but a three-week Madagascar itinerary is definitely once-in-a-lifetime.

Don’t miss the incredible Avenue of the Baobabs in Morondava, or a trek in the mountains of Marojejy National Park – hire a good guide and you might spot the rare while silky sifaka lemur. Local contacts are essential, and a good tour company can make all the difference in Madagascar, even if you only use them to book flights and transfers.

And where to stay? Isalo Rock Lodge, in Isalo National Park, might just be the best value hotel in the world. For €100 a night, you’re living in five-star luxury in what feels like the middle of the Grand Canyon – all cliffs, caves, swimming holes and desert vistas.

For more traditional honeymoon fare, Constance Tsarabanjina is an all-inclusive with beautiful suites and postcard-perfect beaches, or the more low-key Anjajavy Le Lodge has eco credentials, interesting walking trails and playful lemurs that cross your path on the way to dinner every evening.

Tanzania 

When you think of honeymooning in Tanzania, the first place that springs to mind is the Serengeti. But this amazing country has so much more to offer to intrepid newlyweds with a thirst for adventure.

There are 16 national parks in the country, many of which provide amazing opportunities for wildlife-spotting and with luxury safari camping or lodges. Don’t miss the Ngorongoro Crater for more animals all crammed in one place than you can dream of, visit Tarangire for huge baobab trees and, if you’re lucky, the rare spotty zebras (they have a genetic mutation!), or head north to Lake Natron to see millions of flamingos.

If you’re the more adventurous types, what better way to extend your post-wedding high than by hiking to the roof of Africa? Climbing Kilimanjaro might not be quite as relaxing as lying on a beach, but with full-service camping and plenty to see and do, it’d certainly be an exhilarating and memorable way to start your married life together.

Egypt

Egypt is one of the best destinations to visit in Africa for a honeymoon if you want to see pyramids, explore the desert, snorkel and diving in crystal clear water with plenty of fishes and marine animals. 

There is also a wide selection of 5-star resorts in the most popular tourist towns, such as Hurghada, Marsa Alam, and Sharm el Sheik. You’ll get a lot of value for your money here, and since you’re on honeymoon it’s also nice that everything is included. 

The Egyptian resorts have everything to make your trip special, including hammam baths, spa section with treatments, indoor and outdoor pools. Many of the resorts are also located right on the beach, which means you’ll have walking distance to the beach and snorkeling opportunities. 

Tours are also cheap, and you can go diving with sea turtles, dugongs and many other marine animals. If you prefer to stay dry, many resorts also have glass bottom boats, where you get to see what’s below the surface without getting wet. 

My favorite resort in Marsa Alam is the Gemma resort, which has its own private beach. In Hurghada, I recommend the Meraki Resort and Old Palace Resort Sahl Hasheesh.

South Africa

South Africa is the perfect country for an African honeymoon. There is something for everyone, ranging from the expansive beaches and wetlands in St. Lucia, South Africa to the luxurious Winelands in Cape Town. Couples looking for outdoor activities, safari and beaches will be content at a beachside resort near the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Newlyweds who’d prefer a little more luxury would be happy anywhere along the famous Garden Route near Cape Town. Mozambique

Extending far along the coastline of southern Africa, Mozambique is a country that showcases the best of the Indian Ocean and African culture, challenging even the likes of Mauritius and the Seychelles as the go to beach destination. Like many of its neighbours, Mozambique has emerged from the dark past of its civil war and is now the ultimate destination for a luxury coastal retreat, with the likes of the Bazaruto Archipelago and Tofo offering some of the most jaw dropping diving and beaches in the world.

Uganda

One of the lesser known destinations for a honeymoon in Africa is definitely Uganda. The country is famous for gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park, but there are lots of other reasons to spend a few weeks exploring Uganda. Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo National Parks offer fascinating Big 5 safari experiences, Kibale National Park is a prime destination for chimp tracking and chimp habituation experiences, and Jinja is known as the adventure capital offering incredible white water rafting experiences on the Nile. 

Uganda has a lot of beautiful all inclusive lodges, where you can enjoy a luxurious stay across the country, indulge in romantic dinners, reconnect with a loved one during private sundowners.

Kenya

If a wildlife safari is on your bucket list (and it REALLY should be), Kenya is truly the ultimate African honeymoon destination. The East African nation is home to 24 national parks, 16 national reserves, six marine parks and reserves, and countless private community-based conservancies.

The conservancies around Maasai Mara National Reserve (including Ol Kinyei, Olare-Motorogi, and Naboishi) are particularly special: They’re owned and patrolled by the local Maasai people, with strict limitations on the number of visitors, number of safari vehicles, and even the number of vehicles allowed at a given sighting. This leads to an awesome, intimate experience you can’t get in the national parks, as well as smaller luxury safari camps that are perfect for romantic couples. Arguably our favorite place in Kenya was Meru National Park, which was once home to Elsa the Lioness of Born Free fame. You can see an incredible array of Kenya animals there today, and Elsa’s Kopje (which is located on a small mountain overlooking the acacia-dotted plains) is arguably among the most posh places we’ve ever stayed!

Zanzibar, Tanzania 

Zanzibar is a dreamy honeymoon destination with paradise beaches, quirky alleys of the old Stone Town, and luxurious lodges. 

Bwejuu in eastern coast is the best beach in Zanzibar, with some of the best all-inclusive resorts, as well. Pick Bazara Resort & Spa for the ultimate honeymoon experience. Exotic, palace-like buildings mix Swahili, Arabic, and Indian architecture in a distinctively Zanzibari way. Private villas are decadently luxurious – and enormous, the smallest of them 148 sq meters. Count in a private plunge pool and large terrace, and just a couple of minutes’ walk to the endless white sand beach called Bwejuu.

Snorkeling and diving are among the most popular things to do in Zanzibar, but in Bwejuu you can also do “reef safaris” by walking to the reef’s edge during low tide. Visiting Stone Town is a must, and I recommend staying the night to immerse in the unique atmosphere of this old trading post. Get lost in the narrow alleys, photograph the famous Zanzibari doors, visit markets for spices and souvenirs, and spend an evening at waterfront sampling your way through Forodhani Gardens street food market.

Namibia

With its arid clmate, Namibia may not be the first place in Africa that comes to mind for a honeymoon.  However, this country on the southeastern coast has some of the most beautiful, and romantic, landscapes in Africa.

A highlight is Etosha National Park, one of the best spots for viewing wildlife from elephants to rhinos.  You need only park at a watering hole and wait for the animals to come by. 

In the desert, you can climb the dunes to experience a seascape of sand, or take an adventurous drive on a quad bike.  Wrap up your trip at the luxurious Mowani Mountain Lodge in Damaraland, where you can see desert-adapted elephants and lions, and ancient rock engravings at the UNESCO site, Twyfelfontein.  Finish your day sipping sundowners and watching the incredible sunsets from the outdoor bath of your thatched suite.

No matter where you go in Namibia, you’ll feel a million miles away from it all.

Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe is a fantastic location for a honeymoon. Whether you’re a couple who seeks thrills and adventure or relaxation among the marvels of nature – it’s for you. 

The obvious reason to visit is in the name of the city – Victoria Falls itself. This mammoth waterfall dominates the landscape and every part of life in the town. You can hear the fury of the falls wherever you’re staying. 

After a Botswana safari, I visited Victoria Falls with my partner. We loved staying at Shearwater Explorers Village. This rustic jungle lodge was a gem! With well-appointed and air-conditioned basic rooms that included breakfast in the restaurant, we couldn’t have been better treated. Thankfully, they also accepted credit cards for everything – which is not always the case in Zimbabwe. The nation does not have a currency, so many transactions are done in USD brought into the country from others.

From the resort, it’s a short walk to the entry of Victoria Falls National Park or the Victoria Falls Bridge. The park has a $30 USD entry fee and is laced with beautiful viewing paths. Walking to the falls bridge, you will cross the border into Zambia. If you only walk the bridge it is quite easy and there is no fee or even a passport stamp. 

While we were visiting we spent a day on the bridge doing some adventure activities. These were organized by the resort and included a zipline across the gorge, bungee jumping and the bridge swing. We also went on a white water rafting trip down the mighty Zambezi River. The rafting was a bit more intense than we expected and is highly ranked worldwide. 

Another great activity was the sunset Zambezi River cruise. There are plenty of options for any couple to select from. Some of them include a romantic dinner while others are safari oriented and some are just open-bar drinking cruises. Make sure you read up on the options you pick before choosing. On our sunset cruise, we were treated with dinner but also saw hippos and waterfowl – so don’t leave the camera behind.

Whatever you do in Victoria Falls, it will be a fantastic adventure for you and your happily ever after.

Victoria Falls – Zambia

Livingstone is located in the southwestern part of Zambia and is the tourist capital of Victoria Falls. It’s the perfect place for an adventure honeymoon as there are so many day trips and activities to do in Livingstone.  
One of the top attractions here is Victoria Falls.  These giant waterfalls span across Zambia and Zimbabwe and you can visit both sides of the Falls.  Over 90% of the Falls are on the Zimbabwean side and they also have the best panoramic views.

If you are looking for something more relaxed I can recommend the High Tea at the Royal Livingstone Hotel.   The property is overlooking the Zambesi River and our high tea included zebras having their lunch on the lawn as well.

You can also go on safari in Livingstone or head to Chobe National Park in Botswana for the day.  Chobe has the largest concentration of elephants of any safari.  We were able to see elephants swimming in the river and playing.

Whether you want to go on safari, stay in a luxury eco lodge or more adventurous things like bungee jumping you can find it all in Livingstone.
