How to Spend a Honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast

Together with the Greek Islands and Algarve, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean Sea. Every year more than 5 million tourists visit the region looking for stunning scenery, lovely towns and relaxation on one of the many beaches. During certain months, this region becomes one of the most crowded in Italy so here we’ll give you some tips on how to make the most of your honeymoon.

The Amalfi Coast is a famous 30-mile stretch of coastline nearly 35 miles south of Naples that has been attracting tourists for decades.

The Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for beautiful towns such as Positano, Amalfi or Ravello, pristine beaches and a stunning landscape that combines coastal mountains, blue sea and lush forests. Additionally, the Amalfi Coast is home to some fascinating islands such as Capri which add even more variety to this small region.

One of the best things about the Amalfi Coast is its diversity, making it a destination that can be experienced in many ways. If you like the outdoors you can hike one of the many scenic trails in the area or drive along the winding mountain roads, while if you’re looking for relaxation you can enjoy several days at one of the many gorgeous beaches and charming towns. If you like bustling towns you can go to Positano or Sorrento whereas if you want something quieter, you can stay in lesser-known places.

When to Honeymoon at the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast enjoys pleasant weather the whole year with temperatures rarely dropping below 40ºF or going above 95ºF, so it can be visited at any time. However, most tourists arrive in July and August during the summer holidays to enjoy the beach.

During May, June, and October temperatures usually range between 70°F and 80ºF, hotel rates aren’t expensive, there’s still around 8 hours of daylight and there are no large crowds making them the best months to visit for a magnificent honeymoon.

How to get there

Most visitors to the Amalfi Coast fly into Naples and then take a train or bus to visit the towns. Transport is well developed and there are both buses and train services that connect the most popular towns.

If you’re on a budget and you aren’t looking for big luxuries, you can take the bus or the Circumvesuviana local train that connects Naples with Pompeii and Sorrento. Alternatively, there’s the Campania Express train which is a bit more expensive but also more comfortable.

Another option if you want to move freely and not depend on fixed schedules during your honeymoon is renting a car.

Even though it’s possible to drive along the coast in less than 2 hours, the views are simply spectacular and it’s said to be one of the most scenic routes in Europe, so it’s better not to rush! Take your time and stop as many times as you want because every stop will be worth it. If you have the time, try to spend at least one evening in one of the towns to enjoy their charm at night when most of the tourists are gone.

If you decide to drive, there are two very important things to keep in mind:

  • There are a lot of zigzags, windy roads, and driving in Italy is an adventure on its own
  • Parking in some towns can be hard to find and quite expensive

Lastly, there are ferries that connect the main coastal towns along the Amalfi Coast with Salerno, Sorrento and Capri.

Where to visit on your honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi coast is full of worthwhile places. Some of the must-sees in your honeymoon are:

Sorrento

Sitting at the start of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is one of the most popular towns in the area. With gorgeous architecture, great beaches, many shops, and excellent accessibility, Sorrento is a perfect place if you want to enjoy the city and use it as a base for day trips. From here you can take the Circumvesuviana train to go to Naples and Pompeii, or take a ferry to Capri.

Some of the highlights in Sorrento are the clear waters of Naples Bay and Marina Piccola beach, Punta Campanella nature reserve, Piazza Tasso, Basilica di Sant’Antonino, and the Duomo dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo. If this isn’t enough for you, take a ferry to visit the beautiful island of Capri or visit the archaeological site of Pompeii (16 miles away) which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s worth noting that Sorrento is one of the busiest towns in the Amalfi Coast but it’s also a perfect location to explore other towns and islands. If you’re planning to sleep here, some of the best options are Hotel Rivage, a 3-star hotel that offers rooms for $150, Sorrento Flats where a night costs $120, and Boutique Suites 106 that has suites for $140.

Positano

Also known as the “Vertical City”, Positano is famous for its amazing views and offers glamorous shops, restaurants, and buzzing nightlife. It’s easily accessible by bus, boat, or car, although finding a parking spot isn’t always an easy task.

Some of the best things to do in Positano include visiting Fornillo or Spiaggia Grande beach, the Le Sirenuse islands for great views, walking on the busy Via Pasitea, exploring the stairs and small alleys, and going to one of the many chic restaurants and bars.

Positano is one of the most expensive towns in the area but it’s definitely a must if you visit the Amalfi Coast. If you fancy sleeping here, some of the best options are the Hotel Vittoria or Casa Albertina, both offering rooms starting at $150.

Ravello

Ravello is a charming town that offers one of the best views in the whole Amalfi Coast. It’s also famous for its gardens -Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo-, its majestic Cathedral of Ravello, and its renowned festival that takes place every summer. If you’re looking for a day trip, you can take a boat and visit the island of Capri.Even though Ravello doesn’t have direct access to the beach, it’s one of the most romantic towns in the area making it a perfect destination for those looking for a peaceful night on their honeymoon.

Some of the best hotels in the area are Le Perla d’Italia and Nonno Francesco B&B, where you can stay for $120 per night.

Amalfi

Once an important trading center, Amalfi is currently the largest town in the area and a popular destination for visitors looking for both medieval architecture and history. Some of the highlights in the city are its beach, the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea which was built in the 10th century, and the Cloister of Paradise, an Arab style building which was built in the 13th century and is currently an open-air museum with many mosaics and paintings. If you like museums, the Museum of Paper is also a must.

If you want to spend the night in Amalfi, some of your best choices are the Residenza Del Duca that offers rooms and flats for $120, and the Hotel Amalfi that has rooms for $100.

These are just four places that we recommend in the Amalfi Coast. However, there are many other towns that are well worth visiting such as Capri -a perfect day-trip from any of the towns mentioned above-, Ischia, Praiano, Conca dei Marini or Procida. All of these are gorgeous so you can’t go wrong!

All in all, the Amalfi Coast is a top destination for honeymooners with its beautiful towns, beaches, and stunning scenery. It can get very crowded during summer but if you plan ahead and visit during autumn or spring, you’ll be able to make the most of your trip and enjoy this unique area to the fullest.
