Honeymoon Destinations in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has many beautiful and romantic destinations perfect for any honeymoon. And each of these areas has great resorts and accommodations to make your honeymoon that much more enjoyable.

No matter what time of year you decide, you’ll want to bring plenty of swimsuits and sunscreen to enjoy the gorgeous beaches that Puerto Rico offers. Here are a few of the best honeymoon destinations in Puerto Rico and their corresponding accommodations.

San Juan

One such beach, called Condado Beach, can be found in San Juan along the north-eastern coast of the island. Condado Beach is known by locals as a tourist beach, and for good reason, it has some of the best resorts and a true island vibe.

Condado Beach is a place any visitor will want to put on their list of must-see locations while in Puerto Rico. The city of San Juan also offers some seriously interesting attractions and beautiful scenery, along with amazing options for hotels and resorts.

San Juan holds a variety of historical buildings and cathedrals, you can easily spend a whole day leisurely walking the streets of Old San Juan with your loved one and marveling at the natural splendor of the city.

While you’re enjoying the beauty and history of Old San Juan, you can stop midday at a trendy and intimate little café by the name of Casa Cortes Chocobar. The theme of the café is, you guessed it, chocolate! Nothing says dreamy like sharing a chocolatey treat with your sweetheart in a bright, charming café just off the cobbled street of a quaint, island city.

Vieques

Your vacation couldn’t be complete without a trip to the smaller islands off the coast of the main island. Vieques is a small, picturesque island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico’s mainland. In addition to gorgeous beaches, Vieques is the perfect place to enjoy the multitude of more adventurous outdoor activities that are available in Puerto Rico.

Whatever your adventure style might be, Vieques has variety; jet-skiing, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, and mountain hiking are just a few of the activities you can get into on the island.

Enjoy time indoors or lounging poolside at one of the jaw-dropping resort locations on Vieques, like the renowned W Retreat & Spa. The resort has luxury rooms with ocean views, restaurants, massage services, and you can even sign up for their honeymoon registry and let your wedding guests help pay for your trip as a wedding gift.

Culebra

Also off the east coast, is another small island called Culebra. The island of Culebra is one of the larger islands but still a little quieter than some of its counterpart islands, which makes it a glorious destination for newlyweds looking to spend some quiet and quality time with one another. Culebra offers many of the same amenities as Vieques but you’re more likely to find quieter, more private beaches here.

Getting to Culebra can be a challenge if you do not plan for it.  You can fly there on a flight that will be less than $200 RT, but the more affordable way is to take the ferry.  The ferry has its own issues, long lines.

To avoid the lines that can take hours to get through, I highly recommend booking an excursion with Culebra Island Adventures.  Not only will they take you kayaking, snorkeling and to the best beach on Culebra, but they will guarantee you a spot on the ferry without waiting in lines to get your ticket.

El Yunque Area

Aside from scenic beaches and splendid coastal cities, Puerto Rico is also home to some of the world’s last remaining rainforests. There is something wildly romantic about exploring the rainforest jungles of El Yunque. Unique from other rainforests, the El Yunque National Forest is easy to access and safe for visitors to travel through.

The stunning rainforest will mesmerize you from the moment you set foot into its luscious paradise; waterfalls, tropical birds, and trees that seem to skim the clouds are just a few of the captivating sights to see in El Yunque.

Rain does fall gently throughout the day, but it’s soft enough that a small umbrella will keep you dry when it begins and the rain ends quickly enough that you won’t spend more than a few minutes at a time with your umbrella open. In warmer months, you might choose to keep your umbrellas closed altogether and enjoy the refreshing mist of rain.

If you’re feeling more adventurous on your rainforest explorations, you can choose to join a guided tour group for a rainforest excursion that includes zip lining through the rainforest canopies.

Fajarado

Close to El Yunque in Fajardo is another natural wonder called Laguna Grande. Laguna Grande is one of three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico, it’s the second largest in the country but is often considered the most beautiful of the three.

Take in this spectacular sight on a nighttime sail with your special someone; in the cozy dark of the night, Laguna Grande twinkles simultaneously from its starry skies above and from its glowing waters below.

Extraordinary microorganisms that live in the waters of Laguna Grande are caused to glow and light up the water when boats row through them and stir the waters into ripples. Seeking out an official tour guide is recommended as there are rules in place to conserve Laguna Grande’s natural habitat; official charters will ensure that appropriate rules are followed while boating in Laguna Grande to keep the lovely habitat safe while you enjoy its ethereal, glittering waters.

West Coast Area

Puerto Rico’s west coast also offers a wide variety of gorgeous locations and exciting activities. The cliffs of Los Morrillos are a must-see, the dazzling view atop the cliffs looks out over the Caribbean Sea; the Los Morrillos cliffs include breathtaking wonders like natural bridges and arches formed from the rocks.

Also located on the Los Morillos cliffs is the Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo, more commonly known as the Los Morrillos Light or the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse, it’s a favorite sightseeing destination among tourists and locals alike.

The historic lighthouse sits 200 feet above the sea on top of limestone cliffs and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding sea and lagoons. You can tour the lighthouse, which is free to the public, every day except Wednesdays and most major holidays.

Guanica State Forest

An entirely different forest than El Yunque, Guanica State Forest is a dry forest along the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. Guanica itself is a hugely diverse ecosystem that is home to dry weather plants like the melon cactus in the dry forest and also home to saltwater plants like mangroves and ocean animals like manatees which you can see at the Punta Ballena Reserve right next door to the forest.

There are marked trails to walk throughout the Guanica State Dry Forest and the scenery ranges from being surrounded with tall trees to open plains filled with cacti and other dry weather wildlife.

The Guanica Dry Forest trails display every sight from beaches to desert plains, to historic landmarks like old forts. It’s a wonder to experience such a diverse region of the world and you won’t be disappointed that you made time to include this adventure on your honeymoon journey.

With beauty and intrigue at every turn, a trip to Puerto Rico is sure to keep any newlyweds busy and deliriously happy on a once-in-a-lifetime kind of vacation. Whichever sights you decide to take in and whatever romantic locations you choose to explore, the magic of the island is what beautifully unforgettable memories are made of.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: When to Visit

Once you’ve decided to visit Puerto Rico, you’ll want to choose the perfect time of year. Ideally, a honeymoon comes right after your wedding, but it can make sense to wait if you’re looking for the most magical time to visit the island.

The best time of year depends on what is important to you personally. Winter in Puerto Rico contains easily the best weather, ranging from the high 60s to the low 80s at the peak of the day’s heat. This is also the best surf season, so if you and your new spouse like to ride the waves, you may seriously want to consider a winter trip.

I was able to find some insanely cheap flights in February and booked on a whim one year. But the great weather and the start of the surf season is also the reason that winter is a heavy tourist season for the island, it’s not the most ideal in terms of crowds and longer waits at the best restaurants and other popular locations.

Spring gets warmer weather but fewer tourists and less concentrated crowds means reservations are easier to make. Plus the weather is still good. It’s not yet hot enough to be uncomfortable. Spring is also the least rainy time of the year which makes for great beach days in the sunshine.

Summer brings rain and the beginning of hurricane season. Flights to Puerto Rico will be cheaper at this time of year, but you’ll also meet the hottest times of year on the island. And you may have to schedule plans around the rain. If you plan a vacation during this time, I highly recommend getting a few travel insurance quotes in case you are unable to make your trip due to a hurricane.

Fall in Puerto Rico is cooler than summer by far, and tourists are at the lowest percentage during this time of year. September and October usually offer the most affordable airfare and hotel stays of the year; the discount travel accommodations, pleasant weather, and lack of tourist crowds can make Fall the most ideal time of year to visit Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Getting There

If you’re traveling from the U.SThere are two main ways to get to Puerto Rico. The first, and most common, way to travel to Puerto Rico is flying. Many major U.S. cities offer direct flights, so travel time is pretty easy. Depending on your departure city, these flights average between $300 and $600.

Another mode of transportation is a cruise ship. Many major cruise lines offer cruises that dock in San Juan and other major port cities in Puerto Rico. Traveling to Puerto Rico by cruise ship does mean a longer travel time, but it’s often more leisurely and offers amazing sightseeing.

If you’re traveling from Europe – by either plane or cruise ship – you’ll have to fly into a U.S. city first. This adds additional travel time and will be more expensive. Flying into the U.S. and then into Puerto Rico can range from $600 to $1200.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Safety

Traveling to any new destination brings with it issues of safety. The good news is Puerto Rico is considered a relatively safe destination for tourists. There are some criminal elements in Puerto Rico – like in any city in the world – but staying aware of your surroundings will go a long way.

One big safety concern in Puerto Rico is the potential for tropical storms or hurricanes. Hurricane season runs from June to November. This shouldn’t discourage any travel during this time of year, but it’s best to stay on top of changing weather conditions in the area.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Packing List

Like many other island destinations, you’ll want to be prepared for lots of sunshine, warmer temperatures, and many outdoor activities. Keep these few essentials in mind when packing your bags for Puerto Rico.

  • Cotton or lightweight clothing
  • Swimsuits and a cover-up
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals
  • Sun hat or sunglasses
  • Lightweight rain jacket
  • Sunscreen and bug repellant

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Things to Do

There are plenty of romantic activities to partake in while honeymooning in Puerto Rico. You can find activities to suit your interests and vibe. Here are a few of the top activities to consider on your honeymoon.

Beaches and Water Activities

Puerto Rico is lined with dozens of different beaches that can be used to soak up the sun and take some time to relax. Plus, these beaches are often home to the water activities Puerto Rico is known for. You can find snorkeling, paddle boarding, or just swimming in crystal clear waters.

Experience the Bioluminescent Bay Phenomena

Two of Puerto Rico’s beaches are home to an amazing natural phenomenon. Both Mosquito Bay in Vieques and Laguna Grande in Fajardo are home to bioluminescent waters. You can take kayak tours and other guided tours to see the glowing blue waters up close.

Enjoy a Romantic Dinner

Puerto Rico offers visitors luxury dining experiences with beautiful ocean views. Find a great restaurant and dine in bliss. You can find great traditional fare or internationally inspired-cuisine.

Horseback Riding

Different areas around the island offer guided horseback riding tours through the amazing landscapes of Puerto Rico. You can choose between beach rides, scenic trails, or winding ridings through the lush countryside.

Sailing and Sunset Cruises

Puerto Rico also offers sunset cruises for honeymooners to experience the open ocean and painted skies as the sun dips below the water. These excursions can be booked privately and offer a very romantic setting.

Wine Tasting

There are a handful of wineries and vineyards dotted around Puerto Rico that offer wine tasting. Not only will you get to taste wine grown and made in Puerto Rico, but you’ll get to do it all while enjoying the natural beauty of the island landscape.

Spa Treatments

Many of the resorts around Puerto Rico offer in-house spas. You can book a couple’s day getting pampered while being surrounded by the beauty of Puerto Rico.

Take Dance Lessons

A great way to immerse yourself in the culture and local scenes of Puerto Rico is to take a dance lesson. Dancing is an important part of Puerto Rican culture, so you can easily find a salsa or tango dance class.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Getting Around

It’s also a good idea to plan ways to get around the island once you arrive in Puerto Rico. The island is quite large and is surrounded by smaller islands that can be visited for day trips, so you’ll need easy ways to move around. Fortunately, there are plenty of transportation options to move from place to place around Puerto Rico

Rental Cars

Rental cars are a great option if you’re looking for a high level of freedom, but urban traffic can get backed up quickly. You can find major car rental companies operating at the airport and in most major cities, so finding an option should be fairly easy.

Taxis and Ride Sharing

Another great option for transportation around the island is taxis and ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft. Taxis are very safe and trustworthy, so it’s easy to get around using them.

Public Buses

Public buses are fairly reliable options and very cost-effective. The only downside to these buses is their limited access to more rural areas of the island.

Hop-on, Hop-off Tours

These hop-on, hop-off tours are great options in the big cities around Puerto Rico. These tours offer a running commentary of the area and frequent stops at well-known tourist stops.

Ferries

If you’re looking to move from the main island to some of the smaller islands, you’ll want to consider ferries. These options run frequently and help get visitors to some of the most beautiful areas of Puerto Rico.

Domestic Flights

If your honeymoon plans take you to different areas around Puerto Rico, you’ll want a quick way to move between these large areas. A good answer to this issue is booking a domestic flight. These are offered regularly in large metropolitan areas.

Motorcycle and Scooter Rentals

Motorcycle and scooter rentals are great options for people who feel comfortable handling these vehicles. They offer a greater level of freedom to move around the island and around any traffic congestion.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Cost

Another important piece of a Puerto Rico honeymoon is understanding how much you might spend on your trip. Depending on a number of factors, a moderate honeymoon can cost between $2,000 and $4,000. But if you’re looking for more luxury accommodations and activities, you can look at spending between $5,000 and $10,000.

Puerto Rico is a great option for a romantic and luxurious honeymoon. You can find a variety of different areas to explore each with great accommodations and experiences to partake in. This guide will help you be prepared to enjoy everything Puerto Rico has to offer.
