El Yunque Area

Aside from scenic beaches and splendid coastal cities, Puerto Rico is also home to some of the world’s last remaining rainforests. There is something wildly romantic about exploring the rainforest jungles of El Yunque. Unique from other rainforests, the El Yunque National Forest is easy to access and safe for visitors to travel through.

The stunning rainforest will mesmerize you from the moment you set foot into its luscious paradise; waterfalls, tropical birds, and trees that seem to skim the clouds are just a few of the captivating sights to see in El Yunque.

Rain does fall gently throughout the day, but it’s soft enough that a small umbrella will keep you dry when it begins and the rain ends quickly enough that you won’t spend more than a few minutes at a time with your umbrella open. Close to El Yunque in Fajardo is another natural wonder called Laguna Grande. Laguna Grande is one of three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico, it’s the second largest in the country but is often considered the most beautiful of the three.

Take in this spectacular sight on a nighttime sail with your special someone; in the cozy dark of the night, Laguna Grande twinkles simultaneously from its starry skies above and from its glowing waters below.

Extraordinary microorganisms that live in the waters of Laguna Grande are caused to glow and light up the water when boats row through them and stir the waters into ripples. An entirely different forest than El Yunque, Guanica State Forest is a dry forest along the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. Guanica itself is a hugely diverse ecosystem that is home to dry weather plants like the melon cactus in the dry forest and also home to saltwater plants like mangroves and ocean animals like manatees which you can see at the Punta Ballena Reserve right next door to the forest.

There are marked trails to walk throughout the Guanica State Dry Forest and the scenery ranges from being surrounded with tall trees to open plains filled with cacti and other dry weather wildlife.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: When to Visit

Once you’ve decided to visit Puerto Rico, you’ll want to choose the perfect time of year. Ideally, a honeymoon comes right after your wedding, but it can make sense to wait if you’re looking for the most magical time to visit the island.

The best time of year depends on what is important to you personally. Winter in Puerto Rico contains easily the best weather, ranging from the high 60s to the low 80s at the peak of the day’s heat. This is also the best surf season, so if you and your new spouse like to ride the waves, you may seriously want to consider a winter trip. 

I was able to find some insanely cheap flights in February and booked on a whim one year. But the great weather and the start of the surf season is also the reason that winter is a heavy tourist season for the island, it’s not the most ideal in terms of crowds and longer waits at the best restaurants and other popular locations.

Spring gets warmer weather but fewer tourists and less concentrated crowds means reservations are easier to make. Plus the weather is still good. It’s not yet hot enough to be uncomfortable. Spring is also the least rainy time of the year which makes for great beach days in the sunshine.

Summer brings rain and the beginning of hurricane season. Flights to Puerto Rico will be cheaper at this time of year, but you’ll also meet the hottest times of year on the island. And you may have to schedule plans around the rain. If you plan a vacation during this time, I highly recommend getting a few travel insurance quotes in case you are unable to make your trip due to a hurricane.

Fall in Puerto Rico is cooler than summer by far, and tourists are at the lowest percentage during this time of year. September and October usually offer the most affordable airfare and hotel stays of the year; the discount travel accommodations, pleasant weather, and lack of tourist crowds can make Fall the most ideal time of year to visit Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Honeymoon: Getting There

If you’re traveling from the U.SThere are two main ways to get to Puerto Rico. The first, and most common, way to travel to Puerto Rico is flying. Many major U.S. cities offer direct flights, so travel time is pretty easy. Depending on your departure city, these flights average between $300 and $600.

Another mode of transportation is a cruise ship. Many major cruise lines offer cruises that dock in San Juan and other major port cities in Puerto Rico. Traveling to Puerto Rico by cruise ship does mean a longer travel time, but it’s often more leisurely and offers amazing sightseeing. 

If you’re traveling from Europe – by either plane or cruise ship – you’ll have to fly into a U.S. city first. This adds additional travel time and will be more expensive. Flying into the U.S. and then into Puerto Rico can range from $600 to $1200.
