The JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa: a perfect honeymoon destination

We wanted a sun-filled destination that we could fly directly to from our home in Vancouver.  The 5-hour flight from Vancouver was easy and painless.

Located in the middle of the hotel zone in Cancun, the JW Marriott is a luxury resort offering 4-star services and amenities.  Overlooking the mighty Atlantic Ocean, this resort is the epitome of Mexican hospitality.

Offering both all-inclusive and a la carte services, the JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Sap has a wide variety of amenities and services that are the perfect fit for honeymooners.  Choose Club 91 if an all-inclusive experience is your goal. We chose the a la carte option as we knew that we wanted to try a lot of the local cuisine.

JW Marriott Cancun Accommodations

The views from the ocean-front rooms is spectacular.  The first time we opened our balcony doors we were greeted by the sound of the ocean.  I don’t think there’s a more relaxing sound in the world.

The hotel rooms and suites have all been recently renovated.  The décor is beautiful with colour palettes of blues and whites with reclaimed wood accents, inspired by the oceanfront vistas of sandy beaches and the wide-open ocean.  The standard and deluxe rooms are quite large and feel beautifully spacious. The bathrooms are particularly lovely with separate showers and large soaker tubs.

JW Marriott Cancun Amenities

The grounds at the JW Marriott are extremely well-kept, and the pools are lovely.  Make sure to pack several swimsuits, sandals and lots of sunscreen as you will undoubtedly want to spend a lot of time in the pools!  Most of the pools are connected, allowing for easy movement between them. There’s a great infinity pool that overlooks the ocean – my favourite ?.  There is an adult-only pool with a swim-up bar, although we didn’t notice a lot of families staying at the hotel.

The pool-side restaurant has great food, and there were plenty of waiters circulating around the pool, taking orders, bringing drinks, and making everyone feel comfortable and well taken care off.

We stayed at the JW Marriott in February and the hotel was offering several Valentine’s Day specials, including a spa special for couples.  Our services included a 50-minute massage, a 30-minute facial and a hand and foot scrub. It was great to have our treatments in the same room and we each thought our therapists were very skilled.

After our spa treatments were complete, we were told that there was a surprise for us at the spa pool.  We were led down to the pool where we found two poolside lounges showered with rose petals, alongside a table with champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries!  It was such a special conclusion to our very relaxing spa treatments.

Visiting Cancun

We found lots to see and do around Cancun.  The hotel had a very convenient lobby desk where many excursions could be booked, and we used this service to book a day trip to Chichen Itza, which was a really memorable experience.  This ancient Mayan city is a must-see experience if you’re visiting Cancun. We also went to nearby Playa del Carmen to see a dinner theatre/cabaret performance of Rauxa. This was definitely an adult-only experience – very mature themes!  Dinner and drinks were included and the performance was definitely entertaining!

There’s a local bus (just 12 pesos) in front of the hotel that takes passengers into the city of Cancun, just 20 minutes away.  This was a great experience with lots of local colour. We wandered around Cancun, tried some of the local cuisine and really enjoyed seeing more of the area.

Hotel Dining

There are many dining options both in the hotel and around it.  The Sedona Grill has both indoor and outdoor seating and has an amazing breakfast buffet.  The Beach Walk is the poolside restaurant; we really enjoyed dining beside the pool. Gustino Italian Grill is the fine-dining option at the hotel, with really delicious Italian-inspired meals and a fine wine list.

The lobby bar is a great place to sit and relax with a drink at happy hour or late in the evening.  There was usually a great piano player at work and the really large selection of margaritas were fun to try.

Next door to the JW Marriott is another Marriott property with a few more great restaurants.  There’s a sports bar, a great steak house as well as a Japanese restaurant.

We really enjoyed several of the restaurants across the street from the JW Marriott, including The Crab House.

Cancun is a fabulous honeymoon destination. Staying at one of the best hotels in Cancun really made the experience top notch.  Room rates start at $232 USD per night, depending on the season. We used Marriott Bonvoy loyalty points for our stay. We’ll definitely be going back!
